Generational Rebellion

6 Feb

Every generation has its own rebellious attitude.
In my day, long hair, bell-bottoms and devil music as they called it then were major nemesis to our parents. The “Devil music” was the beginning of the rock era with the Beatles, the Beach Boys, the Who, The Rolling Stones, and many more.
In my kids generation it was chains, black clothes, and tattoos. These became known as the Generation X or Gen X. They certainly are more technologically advanced then we ever thought of being. They are not the ones that today I ponder.
What amazes me today is the next generation which some have termed Generation Y. At the junction of these two generations, one thing that I have noticed is a change in the dress code. Of concern is the male dress code. You know what I am talking about, the ones with the droopy drawers. At first, it was just the edge of their underpants, which was always in full view. That in itself was annoying but now the fashion has progressed to a point where the belt is now fully at the mid-point and even below the butt.
In fact often and I mean often, the pants are so low that they can no longer swing their arms at their sides when they walk as the hands must now serve the purpose of holding the pants up, less they fall to the ground. Some time ago, I observed one individual trying to do some shopping at a local Wall mart and he could not even examine the merchandise properly since he could not let go of his pants. If he did, they would fall to the ground.
I just do not understand the purpose for the fashion. You can observe them just about anywhere and they shuffle their feet, as they cannot produce a proper walking stride. Although I have no wish to remove, any generation’s desire to be different or to express themselves. It would seem to me that whatever the difference should not impede mobility or harm anyone else. One might say that nor should it offend anyone else, but that is a bit too broad. No matter where you go, today you will find things, which are accepted by some yet offend others.
I’m sure that the next generation again will do things differently from Generation Y. However let’s hope that by then maybe things will come full circle and what was old will once again become new.
