Here We Go Again

19 Oct

Recently as I was surfing on the TV looking for something decent to watch I chanced across a report outlining some visit between Canada‘s Premier Stephen Harper and “I guess” Quebec’s newest Prime Minister Pauline Marois. The report indicated that they had met at the “Francophonie Summit in Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of Congo”. The reporter indicated various comments and as most reports showed a few excerpts of each Prime Ministers speech. The report conclude with one comment which caught my ear….Mrs. Marois refused to answer any questions posed to her in English.
Now first let me outline that I am by birth born of French Canadian parentage and therefore my Mother tongue is French Canadian. However that is pretty much my disembarkation point with Quebec’s sovereignty ambitions. For too many years under the rule of Rene Levesque Canadians argued Quebec’s desires for independent sovereignty. With three provincial referendum and the near decimation of the Partie Quebecquois several years later, much of the talk of Quebec’s separation appeared nullified. I guess probably as many might guess muted, but not extinguished. Now it appears that Mrs. Marois appears to have taken up the mantle from the late Rene Levesque. I cannot say that I follow politics very closely but the older I get and the more I listen and see the machinations that go on in Canadian Politics with respect to English Canada and French Canada or Quebec to be more exact, it is not surprising to me that on the other side of the ocean, England and France have historically been so much at odds with each other. The fact that Mrs. Marois would not respond to any questions posed to her in English infuriates me.
I guess as a Canadian I might as well settle in for several more years of listening to Quebec’s incesscant cries about historical injustices and a demand for total autonomy. In many ways I wish they would separate and rid us of the constant strain of wasted time and money to argue every point which will somehow involve Quebec. To me many in Quebec, and I speak mostly of the separatist movement have a total disregard for anyone but themselves. I suppose not surprising as their goal is separation. Call me unpatriotic if you wish but to me the point will never be settled until they do separate. However it should not be done on their terms. Should they separate they should take with them their share of the National Debt, as well as Canada should remove all federal assets from Quebec soil. Not to mention that all previous contract which by definition have been made between Quebec (as an entity of Canadian jurisdiction) could be up for re negotiations since the legal definitions would no longer be correct. Maybe Newfoundland would finally get a shot at getting more equitable distributions of revenue from Churchill Falls. God only know how many more such issues exist.
Quebec always DEMANDS that everybody needs to come to them but they are never willing to even meet half way. It’s always all or nothing. The sad part about this new round is for political courtesy and in the guise of unity both sides will waste time and effort to try and present to the media and hence the rest of Canadians a co-operative front both from the Federal and Provincial players. This will as it has in the past achieved nothing and Canadians will once again lose out on any potential advancement we may achieve in our economy and or industrial development.
Get ready for many more such as,…”The shipbuilding contract awarded to Halifax shipyards October 19, 2011 where a $25 Billion dollars ship building contract was awarded”. Some proof of the Quebec rhetoric has already surfaced when the ship building contracts was awarded to Halifax ship-yards and again Quebec cried out injustices some issues which caused the Federal Government to delay the contract ceremonies to allow Quebec to enter their bid. Thankfully their late bid still did not beat the Halifax proposal and contracts were issued as originally awarded.
The fun has only begun….let’s hope some of the politicians will have the guts to take on the fight and dear God dare I hope, put an end to this never ending struggle. What was it that England did between 1755-1763? What remove the malcontent from the area and transport them to Other French Colonies…..uhmmm…. watch out Isle St-Pierre you have new citizens coming your way for they have NO desires to be Canadians …..
