Action….that is the answer

14 Mar

You know I have been downloading and reading articles on a variety of self-improvement for quite a number of years now. Everything on “How to manifest positively”, “Positive mantras that will change your life”, website that elucidate that they will train your mind to better achieve what you really want. I even read material on numerology and Horoscopes that profess will guide you to a better more abundant life…..the list is endless of what is available, and hey some of it I found as downright hocus pocus and just trying to get a buck out of you. I am not offended by that, everybody is trying to make a living. As Barnum and Baily said so many years ago….”There is a sucker born every minute”…..I suppose at time I am or have been that sucker but equally I console myself in saying that I need be cognizant of, and see the broader spectrum.
One cannot deny or detect something totally unless one has experienced the snake oil salesman expounding his wares. Now I do feel that I can detect much earlier the pattern. “Come right in…come and see the greatest show on Earth…..you will be amazed by the lady with two head….terrified by the wolf boy captured from the dark recesses of Africa…..step right up…..” I’m sure most have seen this scenario played out in the old movies……once inside you discover that it was more hype than fact…..

Don’t get me wrong I BELIEVE there is a very large amount of legitimate and valuable information out there as well, but you must develop a discerning eye and ear. There are many motivators out there which will do much good even if you only follow some of the advice that they offer.
You must also bear in mind that there are NO magic pill or formula that will transform you from rags to riches overnight. I do not believe that, no matter how much they try to sell it as being true. I do believe that you can improve yourself; you can improve your situation, no matter how dire it seems right now.
I think, and certainly for me I have found it to be the case and Earl Nightingale expressed it for me very early on in an audio track I listened to….”the magic word”…..ATTITUDE …it is a track well worth its weight in gold. For without it you will never see the opportunities that life places in your path. With the wrong attitude you will certainly see all the obstacles that are there laying just next to the opportunity but your dark shade glasses will limit your field of view in the same way as in the horse and buggy days.
The driver placed blinders over the eyes of his pulling horse to prevent it from seeing the grass or anything of its own interest on the side of the road. The driver limited the horse’s field of view for the simple reason that he wished it to go only in one direction, forward of his choosing. When he needed the horse to veer to the right he would disclosed to the horse…hey here is a new path for you to follow…the horse soon learned that he needed to go in that direction.
The horse would never remember that from his earlier distance view there was a road to the right, but now, as he is nearer the blinders prevent him from seeing that it is there, so he never turns, unless the driver moves the blinders to show it to him, at which time the horse takes ACTION and turns.
That is really the center of my comment at the start. All of the material you read can only achieve ONE thing….To shows you that there are a myriad of opportunities out there but YOU and ONLY YOU must take ACTION if you are to achieve your goal or dream. The action required may be easier if you have the support of others around you but even if you feel alone, if you WANT something you are the one that must make it happen. It will never happen on its own. Sometimes it may feel like it all happen by itself but in reality you had to have made subtle decisions to talk to this person or visit a site or read this book or article which perhaps very subtly guided you toward your dream or desired ambition. Once there, you have to make a conscious decision to take that opportunity you might feel just fell into your lap. Many for fear of the unknown or comfort would let that opportunity slide by and grumble later of what they “should” have or could have done.
So DREAM and ACTION those dreams into reality. You will be the better for it, and likely the naysayers just might be at your back saying…. “that lucky ba…t..d, opportunity just keep falling in his lap….falls in a bucket of sh…t and comes out smelling like roses….I’m sure you heard and or perhaps even said those things yourself……

BEWARE PEOPLE A SCAM ARTIST or is it just basic economy….. 101

8 Nov

OK so I frequent the second hand shops. Not earth shattering news but just a way for me to find things I can use at a lesser price. Hey it is also “recycling” if you call it that everybody thinks good of you and cheers your effort. Do not turn your nose up at me because of it, I am sure that most if not everyone has checked a classified or two. They are not far different then having a browse through charity shops or second hands stores. Most people will have a good nose at classified ads and think nothing of it. A walk through a thrift shop for little found treasures I must do in person. Checking the classifieds I can do that even away from home.
However checking the classified today via a website similar to Craig’s list is, but has an odder name is Kijiji. Where did they come up with that name is beyond me. That’s beside the point. In this site I often see highlights of people warning other people of someone else’s wrongdoings. Thankfully some people take the time to warn others when they have been wronged. However being wronged can also be a personal perception.
The ad today read “BEWARE PEOPLE A SCAM ARTIST” in big capital letters. Then they proceeded to describe that someone had found two items in a local thrift store and then subsequently advertised and perhaps even sold those items on Kijiji. The writer was upset because the seller had placed a higher price on it then what the thrift store had sold for in the first place.
So I ask. Where is the scam here? That is basic economy 101. Every retailer in the world does that on a daily basis. Find a supplier that provides you with a product at one price and you then sell it at a higher price. Subtract your operating cost and you have your profits.
The fact that today the “supplier” could only supply the items once makes no difference. The principle is the same. Artist sells their wares in the same fashion. You buy a painting at one price and either hang it up for display or re-sell it. If you sell it for what you paid for it then you are out no money but perhaps have gain some enjoyment for a time looking at it. It you sell it for higher price then what you paid for it, then you win twice. You enjoyed the painting for a time and then turned a profit.
It might be interesting to speak directly to the person who placed the BEWARE…..SCAM….ad today if for no other reason than to see if my mental image of who this person is or what they look like matches my perceived image. I will not describe that.
Yes I did reply to the BEWARE ad indicating that I did not see where any wrongdoings had occurred. The thrift store got the money they asked for so they are out nothing. The fact that it could possibly have sold for higher but perhaps only if they held on to it longer. They want to move their merchandise quickly and therefore price accordingly. The new seller is selling to a different audience so may garner a higher price with perhaps a bit more effort. That’s the basis of entrepreneurship.

It will be interesting to see if I get a reply or not.
However this gave me a chuckle and the basis for my rant today.
I know I am behind in my writing and I keep telling myself that I must do it more often if I ever hope to get better at it……practice makes perfect.
But for now I must get back to the classified……

Technology Addiction? or is it incomprehension?

19 May

Not so long ago I made a purchase at one of the local stores. As I was looking at the teller’s machine for the card insertion point, so that it could read the “chip” on my card, the attendant serving me, a young girl perhaps in her late teens, exclaimed….” Oh you don’t need to do that, you have one of the new cards,… here, just tap the card”…In my stupor trying to understand what she had just said I looked at her. She just as quickly grabbed my card and “tapped” it to the screen. Immediately the machine responded with its whirring sound and spit out the paper receipt which indicated that the sale was now complete.
As she looked at me with a smirk on her face, no doubt because of my own dumb looking expression trying to grasp what had just happened, I exclaimed ….. “but I did not enter my code to accept the purchase”. With a continued girlish giggle she exclaimed with no more of a what to do than…”oh you don’t have to, your card has the tap feature. See this little icon in the corner,” a small transmit signal strength display, “that means you can just tap the card.”
She continued to look at me with that youthful grin, no doubt proud of herself that she had once more educated some old ignorant geezer of the new way of shopping. Of which she appeared to be much more cognizant and comfortable of the process than I am.
Well, in my defense, I would not exactly call myself an “old ignorant geezer” but I am for sure old enough to be her grandfather. I grabbed my purchase and left the counter, mind wheeling and wondering about this new card feature.
The transaction certainly was a new one on me. I had not heard of the new card characteristic now making its way into the market place. I suppose in that sense I was technologically ignorant. Now I do travel a lot globally, and often see banking card features overseas before I see them here in North America. This tap feature however was a new one on me, but not one that I would quickly accept at face value. This merited further investigation for sure. I set out to discover just exactly what this “TAP” feature is. I asked various vendors as well as my banking establishment. As they all explained to me that the new cards now transmit a signal that the vendors can read and seamlessly complete the purchase transaction. No numbers to forget. Naturally,I exclaimed that if it can do this without my entering any secret pin number, then “ANYBODY” with my card can make their own transaction, using my card, and this could happen without my ever knowing it.
I must be the stupid one because both vendors and banking tellers quickly and without any alarm iterated that …. “of course that could happen but the bank limits the amount to some small pre-determine value that you determine. As well some merchants reduce that amount, even more”… As well the banking tellers always iterated that if you should lose your card the need to alert the bank “AS SOON” as you are aware that your card is missing. Doing further research on the web I see much text from the financial institution repeating that the burden is on me to guard my card AND alert the bank quickly, blah blah….the legalese jargon is too long to point everything here but makes for an interesting read on how they develop slumped shoulders.
Well I don’t know about getting with the times, but I think this is inherently wrong. For sure it has a certain degree of speed and convenience, which the marketing departments are quick to outline for you. They are however much slower to indicate the potential liabilities that it also gives the thieves of this world Cart Blanche to shadow you.
Now I agree that I am not technologically the most savvy and I know that out there, are hackers, or just plain seedy people which are way more advanced than I am, and FAR less scrupulous than myself. Let’s look briefly at these transmitting cards for a moment. If I can buy online an attachment for my phone which lets me scan credit cards, then I am sure that somewhere is also available a tap reader, whether on open market or the seedy alleys. What is the transmit distance of these cards? Likely not far, but it does not matter, I am sure that the seedy engineers of this world can create signal enhancers to increase whatever signal emitted. Once upon a time a pick pocket had to physically touch you to extract $10 or $20 dollars from my pocket. Now he just needs to scan me. Once he has my code and he is smart he will not empty my account. Taking a random few dollars here from various people could render someone a good wages,….TAX free. How long before any of us ever notice that a ten dollar coffee charge was not done by ourselves. Does anyone EVER check, absolutely every charge printed on their bank account? Carrying this thought a bit further if one can find a card reader why not a card creator. My card certainly was created by a machine. Now potentially two of my cards “could” exist. Which vendor would ever raise a suspicious eyebrow because a transaction did not go through? After all it’s for such a small amount, as stated earlier. Any thief could easily and believably shrug off the inconvenience and just pull out a different card or pay cash, since the tap card will equally work at the ATM. When I spoke to one of my banking person I expressed that this feature HAS TO BE youth driven. I was told then that no older people wanted the new cards too. Perhaps, but I am sure older people are the minority. I for one cannot believe that we are in such a rush that we cannot spend an extra thirty seconds max, to enter a four digit code.
I believe that our younger to middle aged people are so technology driven that they are blind to the potential hazards. I also believe that the banks are showing a certain degree of irresponsibility in providing it just because people want it. Is the market such that the fear of “ if we don’t provide it, someone else will and we lose all those transactions revenue.”
I often thought of trying to do the math on how many ATM transaction any bank does in the run of a day. At one to three dollars a pop, for bank visiting users I am sure it would scare most people, more automation and less people.
No, I am sorry, but for me, I have requested the feature to be TURNED OFF at my banking institution. I will depend a bit longer on my stupid four digit code, and follow the bank’s instruction: “always guard and protect your pin”.
What if I forget my pin you say? Well I guess I will do without my coffee today and visit my nearest branch to get my numbers or a NEW one re-initiated. At least if I “drop” my card on the floor, nobody can pick it up and buy their coffee from MY pocket, much less slowly and unexpectedly bleed me for months or possibly years when I get a new card.

Experience keeps a dear school, yet fools will learn in no other.

Prejudices

11 Mar

Ok not a subject matter I ever care to breach because you can’t win. If you happen to disagree with a published newspaper article, on prejudice then you will likely be branded prejudiced yourself. But if you remain silent then I think prejudice wins. It is a two way street. Recently I read an article in a local community week-end paper where the reporter discussed the matter with a local pastor. He asked her if things had changed over the years and of course she indicated that very little had. Some small inroads had been achieved but no major community changes had been experienced. The article went on about some of the local injustices which had occurred in the past and quite frankly it’s all long before my time here in Nova Scotia.
I have travelled in many countries over the years and worked side by side with MANY nationalities, religions, and people of color, and with each one I was offered the same common respect as I offered them. However equally in every instant they demanded nothing from me other than respect. Working and helping peoples as equals I have no problems with.
However most articles I read, or road signs I see, or decreed holiday I hear of, are I believe for the most part a one sided cry.
They make me feel as if they are prejudiced against me. I of course am Caucasian, (oh God there it is, it’s out) but I am not prejudiced against anyone no matter how much you try and make me feel that I am. I don’t however agree with all of the propaganda. I have no special centers, or declared United Nations day, I get no special treatment from any government agency and certainly get nothing but bad publicity as an oppressor in the press.
However for me there is one glimmer of light in all of this and that is when I think back a few years when by chance I happen to channel surf and fell on a reception which Bill Cosby was speaking. I always liked Bill so I decided to listen in a little longer. The event was the 50th Anniversary commemoration of the Brown vs Topeka Board of Education Supreme Court Decision (1) (2)
Dr. Bill Cosby was one of the guest speakers. Interestingly he was subsequently severely chastised for what he said immediately following the event by some of the black communities. It became known as Bill Cosby’s Pound Cake Speech. Today if you Google the event you will find many discussions regarding what he said with most agreeing with the comments, well for the most parts. I certainly do not wish to analyze Mr. Cosby’s speech here but I do find very few references to it in public conversations or newspaper articles, or when prejudices are being declared.
For many years I have said that prejudice in the media will ALWAYS be there as long as people are treated differently. Until society starts to accept that you get (everyone) what you work for NOT for what you are given whether directly or as preferential treatment. You can never satisfy both sides of the equation’s equal sign. In mathematics you cannot transpose part of the expression from one side of the equal sign to the other, without doing the same to both sides. Prejudice is the same or at least similar. What one group receives the others also must receive. However in life there are non mathematical considerations. That consideration is one of perception. If one side perceives that someone is getting the same as they are but without the same effort put forward, then the equation will never balance.
I can stand up for social prejudice as I encounter it. I can speak up where someone might be being bullied or talked down too because of their linguistic accent or derogatory remarks because of their looks, or religious belief, but when it comes to cultural prejudice I’m afraid no matter what I say or do unless I am being subservient it will not appease them. That prejudice is cultural baggage. That prejudice, is internal to that part of the culture and themselves, and it’s a one way view. “If you do not see life or things my way it’s because you are being prejudiced against me”. It seems to me that no matter what, “I”… as a Caucasian am being blamed for things I have not done just because of MY color. In most cases the accusations by the people crying out the injustices have not been submitted to it themselves. My suitcase will never be big enough to store all that baggage.
Groups and cultures can petition any government for whatever compensation they desire but no government edict can magically evaporate prejudices. In fact the more it is catered to, the more likely the gap will widen.
In the end we must all work for what we want and only then can we truly OWN what we receive.
It is harder to crack a prejudice than an atom.

Morality – Suzy Fave-Hamilton

25 Dec

Recently many would have heard on TV of the Olympic runner Suzy Fave-Hamilton’s demise and association with an escort service. Although not an escort user I think I understand the need for the service. Many will frown on this acknowledgement but I also believe many more will agree even if it’s in silence. Society is a fickle thing and certainly its code of conduct is not written in stone. I believe we judge without knowing all of the facts and certainly too much pre-judgment exist at the mere mention of certain words.
I am not saying that what Suzy Fave-Hamilton did is right or wrong but I acknowledge that we all do things that at the time seems right, and perhaps for her they were right, for the time. Why do we only accept pain and suffering as a true measure of one’s self worth. If she has been suffering through a painful marriage or relationship no one would condone her for seeking an outlet or help of some kind. We do not know that indeed her life was in turmoil. She indicated on twitter that she was having problems and how of us knowing all of the facts would say well that’s not a problem? How many would say seek help? Not all help comes from the couch, I also believe that many of them cause can cause as much if not more harm. Some psychiatry is only a measure of acceptable societal beliefs. Abuse can be more than a visible physical abuse. That is an easy and measurable thing, but it can be an invisible one as well, such as psychological abuse. How many suffer through that in silence. I do not know any more than what she stipulated on the media and perhaps sadly I do not care to know. Her behavior has no bearing on my day to day life other than what this media ambulance chaser has forced upon me. Stuck in an airport you are at the mercy of few choices when it comes to television. However it does provoke thought.
I also recognize how easy things and life can get out of hand. One minute you are having an idle conversation with someone, the next you find yourself debating more intimate encounters. This is no different. Life has a way of starting small and growing out of control. We all would like to think that we can handle everything but how many would make the same choices given the same or similar circumstances.
How many pondered a similar question sitting in the movie theatre back in 1993 watching Indecent Proposal starring Woody Harrelson, Demi Moore and Robert Redford. I would wager more than one woman of the time would have, if not out loud then in thought indeed given the money problems, a payout of one million dollars for one night and throw in Robert Redford to boot a resounding YES.
Would the woman in the audience then accept the proposal with less vehemence because the situation was not real to them? Is it not real because the dollar amount is inconceivable as a one night payment to someone living paycheck to paycheck? How many would have done it for free simply because Robert Redford was the prize. None of us can say how they would react given specific circumstances. Life is about choices and those choices are given to us ever day. How we choose to action those choices writes our life book for when we present ourselves at the pearly gates. I am sure no matter how pious we may think ourselves none of us will arrive with a clean book. What we think is the correct choice today may prove to be the wrong choice, when more facts are made relevant on the Day of Judgment, just because we failed to see what was in front of us today or what the purpose of the test was. I believe LIFE is a test. The problem is we forget what the game is and we don’t really know all of the rules. read additional comments in my article Olympic Runner Suzy Fave-Hamilton

Winter driving

18 Dec

Once again we are at the time of year where one can expect old man winter to drop on us any amounts of that white stuff which falls from the sky. As I work mostly in Southern climates it’s always fascinating watching their eyes light up when I show then winter pictures from home. It’s amazing how entranced they can become when they have never seen it. I suppose some of that, I truly understand since for them it’s such a foreign idea. How can it be so cold everywhere outside and for so long to create the winter wonderland. It’s just so inconceivable.
No amount of my extolling the hardships of winter can remove the aura. To them I’m just exaggerating because I am so familiar with it. Perhaps I am. I usually end the story with, “yes indeed winter can be good if all you have to do is play in it”. However for us Northerners winter can be treacherous and miserable. Ask anyone who has changed out a flat tire by the side of the road with a blizzard going on. Or when the City road clearing trucks goes by your driveway dropping some despicable amount of snow which is projected away from their blades while they zoom by at 30 miles an hour. When you’ve just finished shoveling for some 2 hours your driveway only to find that now you have another half hour or more to redo the work you just did. Of course now as a parent you get some compensation watching your own growing boys learn that you never throw the snow of the left side of the driveway (not that I would tell them in advance) because that #$%^& City truck is only going to deposit the snow right back when he drives by. You learn to throw your snow on the right, that way your neighbor gets your snow, of course you equally get your neighbor’s snow that lives on your left .
However this winter has a different twist. Why because our socialistic members of parliament find that once again they must cradle my ineptitude. The authorities, are determining that I can no longer make decisions on my own. Why is that so? Well because they are changing the laws and forcing us to purchase and install “winter tires” on all vehicles by some predetermined date. Of course it’s always under the guise of safety. However is it really safety or economic stimulation. I have serious doubts. Read my newest article https://dl.dropbox.com/u/19327951/Required-Or-EconomicStimulous-2.pdf and see for yourself what you think? Is it really safety, or economy?

Reality TV?

10 Dec

Reality TV?

What is it about so called “Reality TV” programs on TV that draw people so much? Certainly it cannot be because spectators believe that what they are seeing is in truth reality? I can see why the program participants are on there.  They like so many want to be discovered and make loads of money.  They agree to participate as a kind of rags to riches scenario. That I understand, but what I don’t get is the audience’s feverous hunger for the programs. I hear discussions on the street or amongst family members about their attachment to this series or that one.  I almost want to believe that some truly believe that what they are watching is un-orchestrated and live. Can people really be so banal?

Several years ago, a program, which I did watch to some extent for the first season, was the “American Idol”. In the first season, it certainly appeared that many contestants had talent, as do the new contestant of today’s program but in the initial broadcasting it seemed that they had literally come from the streets of obscurity. The program was new and certainly not a household word as it is today. A curtain call for the first program although created long lines did not create the frenzy that it does today. What I watched was young people singing their heart out and certainly many had too much heart for one person. Of course you could pick out those with less heart but too much attitude. But during the entire program it was contestants up front and center and the judges in the back seat.

My problem these days with American Idol program for one is that, it appears to me the emphasis is no longer primarily on the struggling unknown contestant singing his heart out. Certainly each contestant is desperately trying to get that ever-elusive break but the program focus now appears to be more on the judges themselves and who is fighting with whom?  Now the programming seems to go out of its way to get more and more outrageous and boisterous judges as they can.

Some time ago as I was surfing the TV and I seen an ad outlining a possible new judge under consideration for the show; Howard Stern. Howard Stern?

I am sorry but although I understand that he is in the entertainment industry I fail to see, by what I know of him, and I must admit I do not follow him but also recognize that he has been dropped by more than enough station due to his programming choices. How could he be regarded as a judge candidate for someone’s singing ability is beyond me?  What I can see however, is how much controversy he would bring to the program. That of course seems to be a ruse to increase viewership.  What will happen now with the judges seems to be the question, not who will sing best.

I do not watch the reality programs often but inevitably I come across one or two whenever I surf the channels.  Every time I am never disappointed in that the format has not changed…It remains outrageous and let’s see who can do the dumbest thing……

As a result my protest is to refuse to watch any of them….not to mention that my snide remarks irritates my wife to no end when I am home and she may be following one or the other.

How can contestants be so needy for approval and allow themselves, to be so ridiculed on public television. There are so many of these programs now that it is getting more and more difficult to find something decent to watch…..revives the whole idea of reading a good book and let the author stimulate my imagination.

Is anything ever really free?

6 Dec

Often I get into discussions at work, mostly because we can have large time slots where we physically are just watching equipment perform subsea. During these slack times we solve ALL of the world’s problems, as we so often chide ourselves. One of the things for me that often gets brought up is the socialized medicine we have in Canada. True that it is a benefit that I for one would not want to see disappear but equally I wish that there wasn’t so much abuse of the system which I believe exist. That abuse is equally from the general public as it is from the professional within the system. One of the comments that I most often hear is the fact that socialized medicine is free. Sadly including our own citizen believe this as well, but in actuality it is far from free. It cost our tax dollars dearly. But the question which I forward here is WHY do we believe that it is free? Well as I discuss in my article “It doesn’t matter it’s free! Or is it?” the fact that people never have to reach in their pocket and pay for the service there is no mental association with a service cost. I really believe that if people had to pay something, as maybe $10 per doctor’s visit we would once again start to develop the brains to determine for ourselves whether what we have is just a simple cold or is it more? Today I hear it often…“oh it’s just a cold but better go to the doctor just to make sure”. Before socialized medicine, believe it or not people could evaluate for themselves the degree of seriousness of one’s health. Of course some people were better at it than others and many chose professions or careers related to the medical fields because of it.
Today I am sad to say that society has reduced most of us to automatons where we can no longer make decisions of our own. We need to have some “professional” tells us that yes you are mentally unfit! or no you cannot perform this task because you do not have the necessary training or skills. People can no longer depend on one’s honor to make a deal; we “must” visit our own legal advisor before any exchange ever take place. Once upon a time one’s handshake was sufficient and binding. It was binding as because of personal integrity, a man’s word was his signature. Society is reducing us to the belief that we can go through life without any events. But without “events” we learn nothing.
Not everything is life and death or needs to be studied to death before it is attempted. Many things are learned skills. Like riding a bike, you can read as many books as you want on the matter. You can take part in as many study groups as you wish. You can take in as many conferences on the subject as you like, but until you “physically” get on a bike, push the pedals fall however many times as you do (since our sense of balance is unique) and fall you will, you will NEVER be able to perform the task. That is one thing that I feel that today’s society is drastically removing from its denizens, the belief that each can achieve something on their own. It equally removes the belief that each can do the same thing but differently than the rest. Society wants us all to believe that we are all the same and sadly we are not. We are similar to be sure, but each one of us have our own super hero quality. It is up to each of us to test, experiment and discover what it is that we can do better than anyone else. As well not everyone needs to excel in the same fashion. One can be just as happy in a repetitious job and family life that will drive others totally insane, and that’s OK too.

Taxing the rich and political rhetoric

3 Dec

We often hear during political election campaigns about the need to tax the rich and the affluent. Certainly I would not be one of those that the campaign is targeting…ha ha. However how viable is that as a means to generate revenue. I think you will find if you listen to any self improvement information that all specify that those affluent people are the top 5% of a population. They always try to stimulate your drive to reach that level. Even if you reduce the term affluent to a lower level you are still likely only talking about perhaps at most 25% of the populace.
Of that 25% I would dare to guess that they do indeed pay some taxes it’s just that the average little person wants them to pay more.
I’m all for that too but I think I am smart enough to realize that it’s not a simple thing to achieve. For one, the problem of the economy is not that simple. If it was, then listening to any economist on TV would reveal all the parameters and making changes would be simple. But what you hear on TV is that no two economists ever agree on anything. They talk and talk and at the end you’re left with, “What did they say?” or “So what is solution”? I don’t think anyone really knows because it is such a volatile and dynamic thing.
No the present debate going on right now on the US economy following Obama’s recent re-election is anything but straight forward. The subject matter is not an easy one to tackle either and for me much relies on your perspective and belief. To some degree its socialism vs. capitalism.
My newest article Tax the Rich? Is it Viable? expresses some of my views on the matter.
I suppose one might say that a) I never trust a politician and b) I certainly have rarely if ever seen any government organize anything efficiently. They always create too many layers, and I believe that is to allow them maneuvering room to hide their individual agendas and intent. I believe that government should be simple and straight forward. However as we all know that nowadays there is so much money involved that it no longer is about the people but rather how can we divvy up the money of the people. Of course they can’t be in your face about it so they hide their ploys in political rhetoric and legislation. Not very long ago I received a message from a friend of mine as forwarded from a political lobbying group in Canada to overturn a proposed change in a law. At first glance the title of the proposed change in the law Bill C-30 which provided authorities to force internet providers access to private information. Bill C-11 which gave authorities the right to censure internet information, and a cell phone squeeze which was petitioning government to grant cell providers to only 3 major companies. Reading through some of the Bill material one did not detect that layers down the text was hidden several paragraphs and subsections which gave the government the right to listen in on my cell phone conversation and a variety of other means of communications. Needless to say that because of the campaign that mounted the signed petitions the bill was thrown out. What this and since then made me realize is that more often than not government pass things that they know the public would not necessarily approve but they hide by designing multilayered bills. They design in things that they expect will aggravate and be thrown out as concessions in hopes that what they may really want does not get noticed because they keep the arguments focused on the non-target throw away items. To say that I get irritated when I walk around a Mall and overhear someone say that “there should be a law against this or that” or “the government should pass a law to allow something they want“. Maybe that is why these days my wife is starting to go shopping on her own…ha ha….maybe as I get older I am getting more vocal and in your face….oh God help us all….ha ha….but in all seriousness it is all of our right to make sure that OUR government representatives do not abuse their power or position and that they provide a fiscal responsibility to “we the people“…..just as in our work these days we all have the right to stop an unsafe job, so should we have the right to stop a government gone AMOK……

Nobel Peace Prize

Should Mulala Yousafsai become a Nobel Laureate and receive the Nobel Peace Prize?
As I grew up I was aware of the Nobel Prizes in my teens. It’s not something that I followed religiously but as I have always been inquisitive whenever they were announced for the most part it caught my attention. Now also realize that in my days we did not have the internet as we do today with all of its instantaneous revelations, truths, and untruth’s. In my mind back then it was always awarded or seemed to be given to individuals who for the most part were much older and seemed to have dedicated lives to changing things, or had made some very significant contributions to the world. This article is certainly not to recite the Nobel history which the web can certainly meet anyone’s need to research in depth if so desired. But here is a short summation for my comments today. When the awards were first given in 1901 there were 5 categories, Chemistry, Physics, Physiology, Literature and Peace. A sixth category was added in 1969 for Economics.
One thing that I did not realize before today is that each award is evaluated by different groups, and from what I can find many seem to have been froth with much controversy over the years, both as selection committees and recipients. However before I did even the little bit of digging that I have done today, my views on the Nobel prizes was seriously hampered when in 2007 it was awarded to Al Gore which in my mind at the time was so awarded for a film that he presented. Certainly Al Gore was familiar to me as a politician and I must grant now that it “appears” that Mr. Gore has had some additional affiliation with the environmental movement prior to being a Nobel Laureate. Never the less he certainly was NOT associated with the environmental movement to me, prior to this event. The icing on the cake for my distrust of the awarding committee equally came when the Al Gore controversy was still fresh in people’s mind, certainly in mine; the committee awarded it in 2009 to Barrack Obama only 7 months after the first black ever taking the highest office in the USA. Now as I heard this on the news media, and with personal discussions and reading web comments, I certainly thought as many others, I’m sure; what is going on here?
Are the prizes THAT politically driven? Can they be bought?

Now with the events in Pakistan with Mulala, the world is faced with yet again, ongoing political strife, social and moral issues, and let’s not forget, the religious fanaticism of the Taliban. Again prior to doing a bit and I say again just a bit of research reading to get additional facts for this article the Taliban although to the average person they are viewed as a religious order, but they are not in themselves a religious creation as one would think of Catholics, Baptist or Protestant or any other religious church going group. They have religious overtones is without question but the TALIBAN itself was created as a “Politcal” group in Afghanistan in 1996, and was the ruling party till 2001. It has only been recognized as a political group by three world states, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan. Pakistan one of the very states which now abhors this grievous and heinous act imposed on Mulala and vows will right the situation. Fact yet to be seen.
To say that the Taliban, having claimed responsibility are cowardly and misguided, in my mind is without question. To say that it is deplorable that women of that society are considered mere chattel to the men of that society to me is also a given.
The west for its part are screaming injustices, but let’s face it we are not so high and mighty ourselves when it comes to the recognition of women. I certainly do not say that the west physically treats their women in the same manner, BUT as a reminder of the women’s significance, their right to vote is less than 2 generations. In the USA the right of women to “vote” was only granted in 1919, in Canada in 1910, In Mexico in 1953, in Switzerland which certainly everyone would regard as a developed nation in 1971. To say that things are changing I believe and hope since the right to vote has now been granted to women in Bahrain in 2002. In Saudi Arabia, and I remember news cast of this, the women’s right to vote and hold office was slated for 2005, then pushed back to 2009, then again to 2011 and now it is scheduled for 2015. How easily we forget events, for I was sure that in Saudi Arabia after the newscast I recall seeing and hearing believed that it was a done deal. Now I see that it has not yet occurred in Saudi Arabia, but one can be hopeful that it will someday be a fact. At “least” it is worldly openly stated and on the table. It can be pushed back only so long before the movement finally drives the point home and cause change.
So that women are not regarded as equal is sadly a global fact and events occur daily which prove this. A case in point, the recent sexual misconduct to the highest level in the USA now dominating the airwaves. That men and women should balance each other to me only makes sense. As discussed in Chinese philosophy we are the Yin and the Yang of society and unless we work in harmony the world will continue to be strife driven.
Now should Mulala receive the Nobel Peace prize? Well in my mind it is a function of, how do you view the prize? Is it a lifetime of struggle or just recognition of circumstantial events? Well certainly in Mulala’s case her life has not been that long so perhaps one may say that yes it has been a lifelong drive. Was she a late comer to the protest in Pakistan and only talked into marching at the last minute? I have no idea but certainly accept that this could be true. Was she a victim of circumstance I have no doubt in that.
Would the Nobel Peace prize bring further attention to her cause and the plights of women in Pakistan certainly for the initial period of the focus? Absolutely. Would the cash award be used by Mulala to further changes to her cause, I must say I have serious doubts, as she is still very much in a Patriarchal society and underage. To this I ask where is the “mother” in the present news casts? Will all the recent events drive her to further the required changes; with or without the Nobel Peace prize? Only time will tell.
So asking the question of should she receive the Nobel Prize?

I think more information is required and I hope for all of the previously overlooked nominees that the awarding committee does not act in haste but on facts.
